Little Things

Macrophotography, sometimes confused with microphotography, refers to zoom factors that produce an image on the camera sensor that is at least as large as the subject itself. Like holding a book too close to your face, most lenses struggle with focusing on objects this small, but with the right equipment, close observation of tiny little things becomes possible. Ever since I was a child, reading Chickadee magazines at the dentist, this has always fascinated me.

Microphotography, for clarity’s sake, refers to microscopic subjects which would not normally be visible to the naked eye.

BattleTech

The pilot wiped sweat from his brow as another round slammed into the side of his chassis. Stadium lights burned down on him from above and as he questioned his promoter’s wisdom in sending him out here in his Blackjack BJ-1, a fragile mech used primarily for long-range plinking. Still, a comforting thought passed his mind, it only takes one careful shot to pierce an enemy cockpit…

This unpainted 28mm miniature demonstrates what is possible with light-painting techniques and careful editing. Battletech figures, with their sharp angles are perfect models for complex lighting tests. Here I have lit the model from two sides with tiny coloured LEDs, and constructed the background with a light-bank which was moved slightly during exposure.
